"Murdered Writers' Society" directed by Nebojsa Borojevic was first
performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August 2000. Inspired by
Oberiu, the group of Russian (Soviet) avant-garde artists who flourished
after the revolution of 1917 only to be suppressed under Stalin, it is a
charming tribute to all artists whose work is censored, forbidden or
silenced. Daska Theatre is an experimental company from Sisak, Croatia. Since their formation in 1976 they have numerous awards for their startling mix of political satire, music and high-octane physical performance. The research of the last Soviet avant-garde group Oberiu and masterpieces of their leader Daniil Harms which are still almost anonymous began in 1984 with the street performance Yelizaveta Bam for twenty cars and one truck. It continued in 1985 with the show Pif, paf, puf based on a short poem by Daniil Harms. In the last few years the shows Three Left Hours (a reconstruction of Oberiu's first and only big mutual performance which took place on January 24th 1928), Harms and finally Murdered Writers' Society have been made. Daska Theatre from Croatia, with their tribute to murdered absurdist writer Daniil Harms is the most eloquent of a crop of memorial shows, beautiful, touching and full of angry questions about the freedom of writers everywhere. Joyce McMillan, The Scotsman This production offsets a magical playfulness against an impenetrable shadowy core. There is an irreverent candour to the actor's performance that keeps the tone from falling into Dostoyevskian doom. It presents a different way of looking at the world. Cloe Veltman, The Scotsman We sat in a small intimate space and watched for 40 minutes as the actors in front of us gave us a theatrical piece which was miles away from the formal stiff theatre we sometimes suffer. This was like an exquisite present, which contained within it a sadness to chill the heart and the strength of the human spirit to soothe in. Using simple devices and a varied musical accompaniment, the Croatian Daska Theatre most reminded me of the innovative work of Britain's Improbable Theatre. Thelma Good, Edinburgh Fringe Review |
